スポーツは国境、宗教の壁を超える、
そんな力がある、なんてよく言われます。
もう一つ、“言葉の壁を超える”もそうですよね。
僕がアメリカ留学時代にアイスホッケーを始めたことは
すでに書きましたが、もう少し書き加えたいと思います。
留学していた学校にはアイスホッケーリンクが無かったので、
授業が終わり次第、スクールバスで近隣のアイスリンクまで行って
練習をしていました。
練習初日にバスの中でユニフォームが配られたのですが、
ユニフォームにはすでに背番号がプリントされていて、
番号の割り当ては、
順番に、呼ばれた人から好きな番号を言う。
欲しい番号が先にとられたら交換はお好きにどうぞ、
というものでした。
アイスリンクまでの道中、先生も生徒も「投げるぞー！」と
ユニフォームがバスの中を飛び交っていたのを思い出します。
そんな中、僕はうまく言えそうな番号をボソボソと発音練習。
練習した番号が取られたら次の番号をまた練習。
そんなことを繰り返しているうちに自分の順番となり
“17”と一言、大き目の声で言いました。
“Seventeen”
日本人が苦手といわれるVが入る番号を選んだあたりが、
思い返すと笑えてきますが、当時は発音練習した番号が次々に
無くなっていくことに焦っていたんですね、きっと。
日々の練習は、メニューを説明されてもよくわからなかったですが、
いつも最後尾に並んで前の人の動きをみる、
そしてそれを真似ることで難なくこなせました。
定期的に行われる他校との試合になると、
負けてくやしい！勝ててうれしい！！
相手の卑怯なプレイに怒ったり、仲間のナイスプレイを祝福したり、
と言葉に不自由があってもチームメイトと感情をぶつけ合い、
その瞬間、瞬間を共有することが不思議とできていた記憶があります。
“言葉の壁を超える”って、
もちろん僕が最後尾で観察しながらチームに参加し練習ができたように、
言葉が通じない相手とでも一緒にプレイできる、という意味合いもあります。
ただそれだけでなく、
言い表せないような複雑な感情やその場に流れる空気をも
一瞬で仲間と共有できることが本来の意味なんだと思います。
国境の壁を超える、宗教の壁を超える、
という言葉の意味もきっと同じことなんじゃないかな、と想像します。
ボクたちスポーツ好きは、さまざまな壁を越える素晴らしいスポーツのチカラを
身をもって経験してきているはずです。
一方、日々の仕事のシーンを見回してみると
「コミュニケーション！」という言葉が盛んに叫ばれてはいますが、
“頭で考えた”ようなコミュニケーション手段がとられることが
ままあります。
“これこれ！こんな感じのことがしたいんだよ！”
という空気感みたいなものを掴むこと、
はたまた、なにか具体的なアイディアを得るためには、
やっぱり仲間と一緒にスポーツをプレイする、
新しいスポーツのあり方に触れてみることが、
遠回りに見えて結局一番の近道なんだと思います。
ボクたちは世の中に存在する
最高のコミュニケーション手段を知っている。
それを活かさない手はない！そうですよね！？
We have a saying such as “Sport goes beyond country, religious, or language borders, and bring us together”.
I have already noted on the other article that I played ice hockey back in high school in US. My school did not have ice skating rink, so we had to take a school bus to the rink which was about 20-30min away. On the way to the first day of practice, I remember my teammate calling out for uniform numbers that they want and exchanging them by throwing uniforms which already had numbers printed on.
That, I guess we do not see so much in Japan, because people usually take careful procedure or consideration to decided which number goes to whom so they can avoid unnecessary trouble or conflicts. Moreover, students are usually taught not to throw uniforms because it is considered as a bad manner or not paying good respect to uniforms.
Calling out a number in front of everyone made me nervous due to my poor English level at that time. Well, I picked 17 for no reason. It was a number just came up to my mind and fortunately no one asked me to make an exchange. Practice menus explained by coaches were also difficult for me to understand. Therefore, it was my routine to line up at very end and watched everyone play. That way, I was able to observe and catch up with everyone. In games, even with my poor English, I was surprisingly able to share various emotions and atmospheres with my teammate.
“Sport goes beyond language boarders” may stands for the fact that people can play and participate in sports without verbal language skills in one way, just like my ice hockey practice. However, the true meaning of the saying we see in sports is that people can share and understand unspeakable feelings, emotions, or atmospheres instantly even without speaking.
“Sport goes beyond country boarders.”
“Sport goes beyond religious boarders.”
I believe these saying means the same.
As an athlete, we all should have experienced such power of sports, goes beyond all boarders.
It might sound like I am going off the subject, but let’s look at our workplace.
I guess every organization have small or big issues in communication, so we tend to invest in systematic environment or set a meaningless meeting for hours, hoping people understand each other or hoping for innovative ideas to come.
It is also common that people deny or afraid to spend time outside of the office or off the desk.
Well…
We all know sitting behind a desk does not mean you are doing a sharp job, but still, we feel comfortable sticking to a chair or everyday routine work.
When it comes to HIMARAYA, some people think playing sports with colleagues is a waste of time and brings no impact to our work.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SOUL OF AN ATHLETE!!!
We all know the best communication tool in the world!!
Why not use it!?
Why not play sports together!?
Why not experience new sports!?
That is the best tool we have in the world!
YEAH!! LET’S PLAY SPORTS!!
